A Three Dimensional Analysis of Reconstruction Plates Used in Different Mandibular Defects
نویسنده
چکیده
In this study, the reasons of breaking of the reconstruction plates used in mandibular continuity or mandibular defects were investigated. The study was conducted on 3 cases in which reconstruction plates were used for tumor resection or invasive wound. The objective was to evaluate the mechanical stress in reconstruction plates by means of the finite element method. Three dimensional model of reconstruction plate was exposed to chewing force. A commercial finite element solver (ANSYS) was then applied to this plate to compute the stresses generated in chewing situation. Stress analyses have been carried out by applying Von Mises Yielding Criteria. In the standard reconstruction plate, the results of the finite element analysis revealed that stress resulting from the simulated functional loadings which far exceeded the strengths of the components. The main application of this study was the prediction of fractures as a consequence of known forces. If it was assumed that the patient executes several thousand masticatory movements within a week, a dynamic strain would be present due to the large number of changes in loading, so that there was a danger of a fatigue fracture at the point of the stress concentration (as seen in the analysis), as is also confirmed by clinical practice.

In this paper, three dimensional (3D) static and dynamic analysis of thick plates based on the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) is presented. Using the kinematics of a three-dimensional continuum, the local weak form of the equilibrium equations is derived. A weak formulation for the set of governing equations is transformed into local integral equations on local sub-domains by using a uni...
متن کاملReconstruction of Lateral Mandibular Defects with Soft Tissue Loss: The Role of the Submental Flap
Introduction: Mandibular continuity defects after pathologic resections or traumatic events are difficult cases for reconstruction. Defects involving both hard and soft tissue loss are more challenging, because of problems in soft tissue coverage. The role of the submental flap in this regard is presented. Materials and Methods: In a retrospective study from the archived files of Ghaem Hospi...
متن کاملReconstructionof Human Mandibular Continuity Defects with Allogenic Scaffold and Autologousmarrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Background Mandibular continuity defects occur after tumor resection, maxillofacial injury, or osteomyelitis. Despite the current availability of a plethora of treatment modalities, bone substitutes, and various clinical adjuncts, an exact reconstructive recapitulation of large bony defects continues to be beyond reach. In this clinical pilot study, we report a novel method for reconstruction ...

BACKGROUND Recently, medical rapid prototyping (MRP) models, fabricated with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) techniques, have been applied to reconstructive surgery in the treatment of head and neck cancers. Here, we tested the use of preoperatively manufactured reconstruction plates, which were produced using MRP models. The clinical efficacy and esthetic outcome...
